I am a private-rental resident, residing near Wallingford and after coming across your website, I wondered whether you might be interested, and in a position to, take in my 5-year-old Sulcata Tortoise?
I am a single parent and I sadly haven’t the financial security to properly care for a tortoise of this size. ‘She’ is actually a he, but we’ve not long been able to sex him.
‘She’ arrived abandoned and disguised as a ‘gift’ in December 2022 and I have done my best to care for ‘her’ ever since. Albeit, at the time, I hadn’t any experience in caring for reptiles. ‘Her’ name is Poppy (AKA Popstar) or ‘Pops’ as we call ‘her’ and ‘she’ is a friendly and a well loved member of the family.
However, seeing as they live past 60 years, I just haven’t the housing security required to provide a long-term, permanent home what with renting my property, nor have I sufficient funds to provide long-term adult sized shelter. My tenancy is secured, however, I am concerned that should my position here change, then I will likely not be afforded the land that I’ve currently access to at the property, and unlike a domesticated pet, they are not merely so easy to re-home.
I am hoping you might be better positioned to provide a local, stable and long-term permanent home, so not to be forced to re-home ‘her’ to a national sanctuary out of the vicinity. It would certainly be lovely for my children to visit ‘her’, should, of course, this be welcomed and you be in a position to help with rehoming.
Poppy is in excellent health. ‘She’ has been regularly seen by a Specialist Exotic Herp Vet in Oxford. ‘She’ requires land with secure boundaries and an insulated shelter with access to heating and lighting all-year-round.
I can make myself available to meet with you to discuss ‘her’ care in more detail. Although, I will understand if you decide that rehoming is not something you can, or wish to, assist with at this time. You would, however, be helping a local family who are becoming desperate, as we are not in a position to continue the responsibility of caring for this gentle giant. We would, of course, be forever grateful for your kindness and support.
